BUFFALO AS A CANDIDATE FOR MILK PRODUCTION: STUDY RURAL FARM PERFORMANCE IN CENTRAL JAVA AND SPECIAL REGION OF YOGYAKARTA

            In Indonesia, almost totally milk produced of dairy cattle of FH breed (black-white spot) due still ignore other types of dairy animals. This study aims to examine the buffalo potential as a candidate for milk production by studying rural farm performance in central Java and special region of Yogyakarta. This research used multiphase sampling method with primary data and secondary data. The data were analyzed with descriptive analysis. The result showed that population of buffaloes in 2012 is 1.438.294 head, almost buffaloes reared are swamp buffaloes. The respondents have primary jobs as farmers (78,79%), and using buffalo to plow rice fields (48.48%) as well as saving (51,51%). Some farmers (28,59%) knowing buffalo can be milked and yielding of milk, but still failing milking for lack of knowledge and education farmers. Performance of buffaloes farming that controlled are buffaloes stall, reproduction and feed. Two type buffaloes stall are used, individual and group stall with the size 4 m2/head. Buffalo’s reproduction performance showed that S/C is 1.76 and age of first time foal are 3.98 years old. Nutritional value of feed given as did not meet the nutritional needs for feed buffaloes. Buffalo has a high economic value for farmers with an average savings of Rp 25.941.176/farmers. The potential development of dairy cattle Buffalo, will help enhance the economic value of the breeder. Material milk solids buffalo (17,1 %), higher than dairy cattle (12.69 %), of valuable more expensive than the dairy cattle for each tail.The buffalo as of ruminants potentially as a candidate milk-producing, but there are still some problems to make it.
